Geoffrey Hinton is a British-Canadian computer scientist whose research is at the heart of modern artificial intelligence. Born in London in 1947, he spent decades building systems to teach machines to learn. The world ignored him for most of that period. That’s no more.

Hinton studied experimental psychology at King’s College, Cambridge, and received a PhD in artificial intelligence from the University of Edinburgh in 1978. He has been with the University of Toronto since 1987 and continues to serve as Professor Emeritus at the University.

His main contributions are fundamental research on artificial neural networks and deep learning. A 1986 paper with David Rumelhart and Ronald Williams popularized the backpropagation algorithm. This algorithm is the basis of how AI systems are trained today. In 1985, he also co-invented the Boltzmann machine, which was explicitly cited in his Nobel Prize award.

In 2012, Hinton and his students Alex Krizhevsky and Ilya Satskeva built AlexNet, an image recognition system that dominated the ImageNet challenge and represented a decisive deep learning breakthrough in computer vision.

In 2018, Hinton shared computing’s highest honor, the Turing Award, with Yoshua Bengio and Yann LeCun for his research in deep learning. In 2024, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with John Hopfield for fundamental discoveries that enabled machine learning with artificial neural networks.

Hinton resigned from Google in May 2023 after 10 years at Google Brain. He told the New York Times that he resigned so he could speak freely about the dangers of AI without considering the implications for his employer.

His concerns range from intentional misuse, removal from office, and existential risk. By December 2024, he estimated there was a 10 to 20 percent chance that AI would wipe out humanity within 30 years, according to the Guardian. He also warned that the creation of AI-based biological weapons is an imminent near-term threat, arguing that market forces alone cannot keep AI development safe and calling for government regulation.

According to the BBC, Hinton called for international cooperation on AI safety, advocated for a global ban on lethal autonomous weapons, and advised governments to consider universal basic income to manage the economic disruption caused by AI.

Jeffrey Hinton laid the foundation for the AI ​​era. His growing vigilance about where it’s going is at least as remarkable as the technology itself.
