The Critical Role animated series has long wait times between seasons. But the eight co-founders of the media and gaming industry say they will never use AI as a shortcut.
The co-founders of Critical Role spoke to Business Insider ahead of the fourth season of Legend of Vox Machina, an Amazon-backed animated show based on the team’s long-running livestream Dungeons & Dragons.
In 2019, the group raised a record $11.3 million through Kickstarter to revitalize the animation arm of the business, which started in 2015.
Even with tools readily available in the market, the team says there is no room for AI in the process.
“Computers can’t be passionate, and the reason ‘Critical Role’ is here is not just because of a great story or an epic fantasy world. At the end of the day, it’s because we’re friends, we care about each other, and we’re passionate about this story together,” Matt Mercer, the team’s chief creative officer, told Business Insider.
Critical Role CEO Travis Willingham said the crew believes in giving people the opportunity to not only showcase their talents, but also learn from each other and hone their skills.
“We’ve had the incredible privilege of watching people work at the highest level. To me, that’s something that no machine or program can ever replace,” Willingham said.
The group collaborates with writers and artists based in the United States and abroad. The co-founders, along with a team of co-writers, are involved in character design and write episodes for the show.

Co-founder Liam O’Brien co-wrote a hilarious heist episode this season with Critical Role creative director Marisha Ray titled “De Lolo’s Eleven.”
“We yearn for others to tell our stories. That’s what we’ve been doing since the beginning, and AI promises perfection with facsimile,” O’Brien said. “And I think what we love about the characters in this story is that they’re flawed and have a lot of wrinkles and problems. And I don’t even know if that promise of perfection is appealing.”
Key roles in the series are voiced by eight Critical Role co-founders. They created the characters in a Dungeons & Dragons campaign they ran as a group of friends.
Ten years later, the games they played in Mercer and Ray’s living room transformed their group of friends into co-leaders of a multi-company gaming and media company. Over the past 11 years, the team has streamed thousands of hours of D&D campaigns, built a fan base to promote live tours and books, and provided the resources to publish their own game, Daggerheart.
They embarked on an international tour to play tabletop games live in front of arena-sized crowds of thousands of fans. Also in the works is a Critical Role video game and episodes for a second Amazon-backed animated series, “Mighty Nein.”
The final three episodes of “Legend of Vox Machina” will be released on Wednesday.
The show has been renewed for a fifth season.
