BATON ROUGE, La. (LOUISIANA FIRST) — Two candidates for a Louisiana Senate seat have exchanged words on social media after an AI-generated video featuring Julia Letlow was created.
On Thursday, Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming posted a video to X featuring Letlow and mentioning her late husband Luke Letlow. He shared the video with a caption emphasizing that he didn’t make it but believes it’s being spread for a reason.
“The more voters know about Julia Letlow’s record, the special interests involved in this race, and who benefits from the policies promoted, the harder it will be to ignore her. This is satire, but it raises questions worth answering,” Fleming wrote.
In response to Fleming’s post, Letlow said: “John Fleming posting a video exploiting my husband’s death for his own political gain is the most egregious behavior I have ever witnessed in any campaign. I do not support it and I don’t believe the state of Louisiana supports it either. He should be removed immediately. Posting this video is shameful and indefensible. It’s unethical to include my late husband Luke in your video.” It was more appropriate for a representative of Louisiana to not only mention his death, but to make it seem like entertainment. ”
Other Louisiana officials also responded to Fleming’s post.
Congressman Steve Scalise released a statement on social media, saying, “John Fleming needs to remove this AI-generated fake video immediately! Luke Letlow was a dear friend and a true public servant. Cheap politics. “Unjustly attacking his legacy for political points is a new low and may even be illegal. This fake video was designed to mislead voters, and John should apologize for trying to deceive the people of Louisiana.”
Governor Jeff Landry also responded to the video posted.
“We know political seasons can get ugly at times, but we want you to know that the person you vote for is not just determined by the people who support you, but also by the way you live your life,” Landry said. “John Fleming completely showed his true colors. I knew Luke Letlow before he ran for Congress, when he was running for Congress, and up until the day he died. He was a thoroughly honorable and humble servant of this state. Both he and Julia deserve the utmost respect. It’s completely disrespectful to drag someone out of the grave for political gain, and that’s why John Fleming doesn’t deserve to be in the Senate. It’s time to start voting for people who stand up to get things done. ”
Fleming responded to Letlow’s response.
“For some reason, she’s blaming me for that. I had nothing to do with it. But it actually reveals a lot of truth about her personally and what she did on the record,” Fleming said. “Her team has the courage to accuse me of having ties to 9/11, that I promote mass vaccination, and that I work for a doctor when, with my strong background, I was responsible for creating an AI video of driving a bus full of illegal aliens. [Anthony] Fauci, that I am a lobbyist, work in Saudi Arabia, and am paid by “Big Pharma.” All these lies are ridiculous. She has millions of dollars in funding from the carbon capture and sequestration industry, led by Jeff Landry. So I’m not making an AI video about Julia Letlow. What she does is really up to her, and what others do on their behalf is up to them as well. ”
