Stephen Colbert wrapped up the final episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” with a star-packed farewell.
The final episode aired on Thursday, May 21, and featured surprise appearances by some of Colbert’s celebrity friends, PEOPLE reported. The host began the show with his usual funny take on the day’s news before Bryan Cranston interrupted his opening monologue.
According to CNN, Thursday night’s series finale was the most-watched weekday episode of Colbert’s 11-year tenure on the show, according to Nielsen nightly ratings.

Late-night talk shows like “The Late Show” have been losing viewers for years in an increasingly fragmented media landscape. According to CNN, many of the fans who previously tuned in at 11:35 p.m. only watch later through YouTube or social media.
Colbert took over “The Late Show” from David Letterman in 2015. He announced on July 17, 2025, that CBS would cancel the show after 30 years on the air. The network called it a “purely economic decision.”
CBS announced that the show was canceled due to the financial pressures of traditional broadcast television. But critics and Colbert himself have hinted at the possibility of political motives after criticizing Paramount over a $16 million lawsuit settlement involving Donald Trump.
After the show ended, Colbert focused on writing scripts. He co-wrote the new film, The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past, with filmmaker Peter Jackson, author Philippa Bowen, and Jackson’s son Peter McGee.
