YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world. There is a zero percent chance that an AI chatbot will quote it. A 5W audit of 15 buyer queries found 109 cited sources, but no YouTube videos. The same search will show you videos from over 30 creators on YouTube itself.

A 5W audit of 15 buyer queries found 109 cited sources, but no YouTube videos. The same search will show you videos from over 30 creators on YouTube itself.

miami, May 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Billions of consumers use YouTube to decide what to buy. When asked the same question, the AI engine behaves as if it doesn’t exist.

that’s the discovery Visualization of creators and AIInvestigative audit published by 5WAI communication companywe investigate where the creator economy fits on the answering side of AI.

5W ran 15 buyer-targeted queries (words used by real buyers like “best retinol for beginners” and “Whoop vs Oura”) across five verticals: Beauty, Technology/SaaS, Personal Finance, Health & Wellness, and Travel. All sources cited are coded by type. Results: Across the 109 citations ranked on the text-first search surface tested, zero YouTube videos appeared.

When you run the same query directly against YouTube, the platform returns a deep and up-to-date library of over 30 creator-driven videos from dermatologists, financial analysts, and category experts.

The audit made four additional findings.

  • Topic specialists beat mega-influencers. The authors with the deepest authority are academically certified dermatologists and single-category reviewers, not broad-based lifestyle stars.
  • In B2B SaaS, vendors own 87% of the quote surface. In the absence of a stand-alone video, brands with the most structured text content form the answer.
  • Text-based user-generated content intersects with AI answers, but video does not. Adjacent content repeatedly surfaced on Medium, Quora, and Reddit. YouTube wasn’t like that. The gap is a gap in format.
  • In personal finance, the half-life of a quote is measured in days. In the rate-sensitive category, articles published within the past two weeks were almost exclusively cited.

“YouTube has never been more important in how consumers research products. Never has AI engines been more important in how buyers make decisions,” said Ron Torossian, Founder and Chairman of 5W. “The fact that the two rarely intersect in text-first search is one of the biggest visibility gaps in the market today.”
