The USD 8 million seed round was led by Lightspeed Ventures with participation from SV Angel, Eniac, Seven Stars, and FPV. The startup, which Rodde co-founded with Antoine Gargot and Colin Carrier, also secured high-profile angel investment from Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin and Cruise founder Kyle Vogt, according to TechCrunch.
Faraz Fatemi, a partner at Lightspeed who led the investment, emphasized that while the leading AI labs are very well-capitalized companies, data remains the main bottleneck. Fatemi pointed out that the success of data vendors like Scale AI proves how quickly revenue growth can occur for startups that serve as essential suppliers to these big tech companies.
The demand for ethically sourced and licensed data has never been greater, especially in the wake of the public backlash against unregulated web scraping. In December 2024, OpenAI faced a small scandal after the first version of its Sora video generation model appeared to regurgitate copyrighted video game content and popular streamers, and was likely trained on Twitch streams.
While tech giants like Amazon have been open to using Twitch footage for AI training, Origin Lab will provide a legally sound alternative that eliminates copyright risk and ensures fair attribution.
The magnitude of this highly competitive market for spatial training data was highlighted in October 2025 when OpenAI reportedly offered gaming platform Medal $500 million in data rights. Medal founder Pim de Witte discovered the immense value of this asset class when he started selling the platform’s data to AI Labs, noting that Medal receives 2 billion game video uploads annually across tens of thousands of titles.
