Whether ChatGPT helps home buyers or Snapchatters gain AI friends, it’s hard to escape AI right now. Now, according to new rumors, Google Messages will have its own generative AI capabilities.
This is from a screenshot shared with 9to5Google (opens in new tab), and hidden code previously discovered in the app. The feature is called Magic Compose and it looks like it will extend the smart replies that are already popping up in Google Messages.
From the screengrab, we can see that there are a variety of tones to choose from, including exciting, formal, and lyrical, which create responses in the form of short verses based on user-entered prompts.
kind of magic
When it comes to responses, it seems like you can give Magic Compose a start, or let it come up completely on its own based on the context of the conversation. These images also have an Experiment badge.
Don’t be surprised to see something like this rolling out to Google Messages in the near future. Google has been pushing similar tools to its Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Sheets apps over the past few weeks.
Google IO 2023 looks like a good bet as to when this feature will be announced and rolled out. Of course, we will keep you up to date with all the news of the event.
Analytics: Focus on IO
There’s obviously a lot going on at Google IO 2023 next week. The event is primarily for developers, with announcements about upcoming changes to Android, Wear OS, and other Google apps and services. In recent years, we’ve also seen hardware announcements at the show.
We hope to hear more from you about artificial intelligence in Google products as well. This is an area where Google has traditionally claimed to be one of the leaders in this space, and last year at Google IO 2022 there were several AI-related announcements.
But in the past few months, Google has been overtaken by rivals such as OpenAI and Microsoft. These rivals pushed out their grand generative AI engines faster and with more fanfare. Google has taken on Bard, but is still lagging behind.
At Google IO 2023, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and his team will try to get more ground, perhaps with Magic Compose for Google Messages and more AI goodies. I expect The age of AI is just around the corner, and Google wants to make sure it takes the lead.
