WWE once again found itself in the middle of controversy as fans accused the company of displaying an “AI slop” during the video package for the April 28 episode of WWE NXT. The event, which was supposed to spotlight up-and-coming stars, quickly devolved into a major online discussion about AI and how WWE uses it.
The video segment showed Zarya and Sol Luka after their brutal Last Woman Standing match. It used dark visuals and dramatic narration to show Zarya’s thoughts after the battle and teased what would happen next. However, fans focused on how the video looked, not the story.
Fans slam WWE over alleged use of AI in NXT video package
Immediately after it aired, people started reacting. Many people pointed out strange textures, strange facial details, and strange transitions. Many fans accused WWE of taking what seemed like a shortcut, especially for a billion dollar company.
One fan wrote, “This is proof they’re using AI SLOP lol,” while another said, “So the AI suspicions are real.” One fan joked: “I know damn well that’s not Sol Luca.”
Some fans even accused WWE of releasing too much talent at once to “save money” for that reason.
The term “AI slop”, which people use to label low-quality content generated by AI, emerged as a key point in this video package. It also raised concerns about the future creative direction of WWE.
This came at a time when WWE signed a deal with Writer AI to assist with creative ideas and workflow. We also brought on Cyrus Kowsari as senior director of creative strategy to help manage AI, especially in areas like video and graphics.
At TKO’s recent company meeting, President and Chief Operating Officer Mark Shapiro revealed how the use of AI can improve various parts of the business. Shapiro even said WWE leaders are already using AI to study what resonates with fans and the demographics that consume content. However, he also said that WWE is still in the early stages of using AI.
The reaction to this NXT video is indicative of a larger issue. In wrestling, where presentation is everything, small changes can lead to big results.
