Paradigm-backed startup Succinct Labs has introduced ZCAM, an iPhone application for cryptographically verifying the authenticity of photos and videos.

ZCAM signs media files at the moment of capture, creating a tamper-proof record that links the content to the captured device.
Users can independently verify that images and videos come from a real device and have not been generated or modified using AI tools.

The application is based on cryptographic fingerprints. When a user takes a photo or video with their iPhone, ZCAM generates a hash based on the captured pixels. Succinct’s developers claim that this approach is more reliable than commercially available detectors, which can fail.
This project conducted studies showing that the detector performs well even on unmodified images. However, simple edits like blurring and compression reduce the effectiveness to 96%.

Succinct released this tool amidst the increasing risks associated with generative artificial intelligence.
Citing Deloitte’s forecast, the team predicted that losses due to AI-powered fraud in the US could increase from $12.3 billion in 2023 to $40 billion by 2027.
Succinct Labs develops infrastructure for zero-knowledge proofs. In 2024, Paradigm led a $55 million funding round for the company with participation from the founders of Polygon and EigenLayer.
Succinct’s SP1 zkVM technology protects over $4 billion in digital assets. In August 2025, the startup launched the Succinct Prover Network mainnet and the PROVE token.
The project’s blockchain operates as a decentralized marketplace on Ethereum. Applications submit requests for zero-knowledge proofs, and independent participants compete to fulfill the requests.
In January, the App Store and Google Play blocked dozens of AI applications designed to “undress” people.
