Just months after signing a bill that would remove nearly 12 million Americans from health insurance by eliminating Medicaid, Donald Trump posted an AI-generated image of himself on Truth Social on Sunday. The image showed a man lying devastated in a hospital bed, divine light emanating from his hands, and the demons of Hell floating in the background.
Some of his most prominent and staunch Christian supporters have supported the president through numerous other indiscretions, but many have been unable to contain their righteous anger.
“I don’t understand why he would post this,” said Fox News host and conservative commentator Riley Gaines. “Is he looking for an answer? Does he really think so? Either way, two things are true: 1) A little humility will help him 2) God will not be mocked,” she wrote to X.
Megan Basham, a reporter for the conservative Daily Wire, called the post “an outrageous blasphemy.”
“I don’t know if the president thought he was crazy or if he was under the influence of some substance or what explanation there is for this,” she wrote. She called on President Trump to “immediately withdraw this and ask forgiveness from the American people and from God.”
The show’s host Isabel Brown said the images were “disgusting and unacceptable”.
“There is nothing more important than Jesus,” she wrote. “Frankly, this post is disgusting and unacceptable, but it also seriously misunderstands that the American people are experiencing a true and beautiful revival of faith in Christ.”
Right-wing Blaze TV host Steve Diece posted a simple message: “No.”
The AI-generated image Trump shared was not original. The photo was first published in early February and was posted on X by conservative commentator Nick Adams, who has been sharing AI-generated Bible-themed Trump content. In Adams’ version, silhouettes of American soldiers stand in the background. In Trump’s version, the soldier has been Photoshopped into a demonic figure with horns towering behind the miraculous president.
But this anger was not limited to prominent media figures. Users of Trump’s social platform Truth Social, which rarely faces opposition from his most ardent supporters, also criticized the president over the image.
President Trump has been locked in a war of words with Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born Catholic pope, after the latter suggested, without naming the president, that an “illusion of omnipotence” was driving U.S. foreign policy, particularly regarding the war with Iran.
In response, President Trump called the Pope “soft on crime,” said he was “not a fan of Pope Leo,” and suggested that the leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics was “pandering to the radical left.” Leo, who has also been outspoken about the genocide and catastrophe in Gaza, told reporters on the pope’s flight to Algeria that he was not afraid of the Trump administration and would continue to speak out against the war.
Trump’s post to AI came not only after that altercation, but also a week after Easter Sunday for Catholics and the morning after Easter Sunday for Orthodox Christians.
