Semtech partners with Digital Barrier to launch AI-powered video compression

Semtech recently announced a partnership with Digital Barriers to deliver Semtech Video Compression, a fully integrated device-to-cloud cellular video solution purpose-built for critical video surveillance and analytics.

In a separate announcement, Semtech’s LoRa technology will continue to serve as the core radio modulation for Amazon Sidewalk in all markets during Sidewalk’s international rollout this year. Semtech is a provider of high-performance semiconductors, Internet of Things (IoT) systems, and cloud connectivity service solutions.

The turnkey solution partnership with Digital Barriers integrated EdgeVis AI-powered video compression into Semtech’s AirLink XR60 5G router and combined it with the company’s multi-carrier global smart connectivity services. This enables applications that require live video transmission over cellular networks, such as remote security monitoring, traffic monitoring, and critical infrastructure monitoring, transforming the way organizations manage operations in remote and challenging environments.

Rupa Datta, vice president of connected services at Semtech, said the deal with Digital Barriers represents a significant expansion of Semtech’s connectivity value proposition.

“By integrating AI-powered video compression into our connected services offering, we have not only helped our customers manage their bandwidth costs, but also enabled important use cases for video streaming applications that were previously not economically viable,” Datta said in a statement. “Our multi-carrier approach combined with AI-powered compression provides our customers with both cost predictability and network reliability that traditional MNO solutions cannot match.”

Overcome streaming issues

Mobile video streaming has long faced significant barriers. Maintaining video quality requires high bandwidth, making transmission costs prohibitive. Traditional deployments also require enterprises to source routers from one supplier, compression software from another, and cellular connectivity from at least two carriers to enable coverage, creating integration challenges, extended deployment schedules, and multiple support relationships. These obstacles force many organizations to sacrifice video quality, abandon cellular video applications, or severely limit deployment.

Semtech Video Compression eliminates these challenges by consolidating key components into a single managed product.

  • EdgeVis Encoder applies Digital Barriers’ AI-powered compression at the edge, reducing bandwidth by up to 90% while preserving video quality for analysis and evidence purposes.
  • The AirLink XR60 5G router provides rugged edge computing capabilities to host EdgeVis encoders, eliminating the need for a separate video server.
  • Smart Connectivity Multi-IMSI SIM provides reliable cellular connectivity with no-throttle automatic failover between 600+ partner networks worldwide. Connectivity services are provided for a predictable monthly fee. and
  • The AirVantage platform provides integrated router and connection lifecycle management, as well as video access. Users can monitor all locations, greatly simplifying operations and allowing organizations to scale from pilot deployments to enterprise-wide deployments.

Promoting the global expansion of Amazon Sidewalk

In a separate announcement, Semtech’s LoRa technology will continue to serve as the core radio modulation for Amazon Sidewalk in all markets during Sidewalk’s international rollout this year.

Amazon Sidewalk is a wireless community network that is free to customers and helps their devices work better and stay connected even when they are out of home Wi-Fi range, and currently covers approximately 95% of the U.S. population. This expanded collaboration coincides with Ring’s plans to launch the Amazon Sidewalk network globally in 2026. The rollout begins in Canada and Mexico, with plans to expand to other regions later this year.

Starting in 2023, Amazon selected LoRa as the long-range connectivity solution for Amazon Sidewalk, enabling IoT sensors to operate beyond individual homes and connect both fixed and mobile devices across neighborhoods. This technology plays a key role in transforming Amazon Sidewalk from a local area network to a wide area network, enhancing network coverage and enabling expansion across multiple continents.

Amazon Sidewalk is one of the world’s largest consumer LoRa deployments and joins the extensive industrial and enterprise LoRaWAN networks that have established LoRa as the market leader in low-power wide-area connectivity.

Driving ring extension

Ring showcased its expanded product portfolio with LoRa at CES 2026, introducing a comprehensive family of sensors for security, safety, and home automation. These products join a growing network of devices powered by Sidewalk, including leak and freeze detection sensors, wearable devices, and environmental monitoring solutions, all leveraging the connectivity benefits of LoRa.

The Sidewalk network’s architecture combines LoRa for long-range communications and Bluetooth Low Energy for device setup, creating an IoT infrastructure that can scale to support millions of devices while maintaining the ultra-low power consumption essential for battery-powered sensors and cameras.
