OpenAI Academy has partnered with The AI Collective, Hampton Roads, and Veterans Forge to offer hands-on programs. A.I. Learning sprints veterans The pilot event is scheduled for March 13, 2026 in Reston, Virginia.
The free 4-hour in-person session will be held at Carahsoft and is limited to 100 participants. Organizers say the event is designed to provide veterans with practical AI workflows that they can immediately apply during career transitions, current roles, and further education. This pilot is expected to inform broader deployment across the United States.
In a LinkedIn post announcing the initiative, organizers wrote: “This is an in-person AI learning sprint built specifically for veterans and transitioning service members who need practical tools they can use right away, whether it’s for a career transition, leveling up at work, or understanding how AI really fits into their world.”
Pilot model designed to scale
The March event will also feature military veterans currently working at OpenAI, and participants will be divided into guided small groups based on experience level. Organizers say participants will “develop workflows that they can actually repeat.”
This post emphasizes that the size of the pilot is intentionally limited in order to refine the model before expanding. The organizers wrote: “We keep our initial projects rigorous and intentional so that we can learn, improve, and expand in the right ways.”
The first event will be based in Northern Virginia, but the announcement suggests it could expand to other areas with large veteran populations, such as Hampton Roads.
AI Collective describes itself as a nonprofit, grassroots community of more than 70,000 founders, researchers, operators, and investors focused on AI through events, workshops, and community-driven research.
Focus on workforce transition and applied AI skills
Veterans Forge, which is co-sponsoring the event, is on a mission to provide veterans with AI and future technology training to support civilian career transitions. The organization provides hands-on training, mentorship, and community support to bridge military experience and technical careers.

The Reston pilot reflects a broader trend across EdTech and workforce development toward short-term formats of applied AI training delivered in focused in-person sessions. Rather than focusing on certification pathways, the focus here is on immediate application and repeatable workflows.
For OpenAI Academy, this partnership expands its presence into targeted workforce upskilling initiatives. For the broader EdTech sector, the pilot signals continued experimentation with localized and audience-specific AI learning models.
