NEW DELHI: Ethics will play a decisive role in determining how effectively artificial intelligence (AI) is implemented in the healthcare sector, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology (Independent Charge) Jitendra Singh said on Tuesday.

Speaking at the AI ​​Impact Summit, he cited BharatGen as an example of an early government effort toward sovereign AI.

While BharatGen is a government-owned multilingual artificial intelligence model, private companies are also building digital health and case history platforms, making future integration essential, he noted.

Founded in October 2024, BharatGen develops AI models, including automatic speech recognition and text-to-speech systems for Indian languages.

At the summit, we announced Param2, a 17 billion parameter multilingual large-scale language model supporting 22 Indian languages.

BharatGen operates from the Technology Innovation Hub at IIT Bombay with support from the Department of Science and Technology and has also released domain-specific models for Ayurveda, Agriculture and Law sectors.

Its AI stack spans text, voice, and vision models for comprehensive applications in healthcare, governance, education, and agriculture.

Singh emphasized the need to expand the dataset beyond the planned 22 languages ​​to cover more regional languages ​​and dialects.
