Founders of Alibaba Cloud express their skepticism about the long-term viability of AI applications
Wang Jian, founder of Alibaba Cloud, has issued a harsh warning about the trajectory of artificial intelligence, predicting that a large portion of current AI applications could lose their relevance in the coming years. In a recent statement, Wang highlighted what he considers as the fundamental problem in the AI industry: prevalence of bias and inflation of expectation.
According to Wang, these two factors have accelerated the obsolescence of many AI tools and models. He argues that although AI has made impressive advances in recent years, much of its development is driven by hype rather than sustainable innovation. This has resulted in a surge in applications that could not stand time testing.
Bias as a major limitation
Wang highlighted that bias is a critical flaw that undermines the effectiveness of many AI systems, whether it is data, algorithms, or design. He explained that bias models often do not provide consistent or accurate results in a variety of use cases, leading to loss of trust and adoption over time. The issue is particularly pronounced in applications that rely on historical data that may reflect outdated or distorted perspectives, he said.
The founders of Alibaba Cloud also noted that many AI projects are being developed without a clear understanding of long-term ethical and operational challenges. As a result, what might appear to be cutting edge today can become unrelated or harmful anytime soon in the future.
Exaggerated expectations undermine long-term value
In addition to bias, Wang identified exaggerating expectations as a key factor in short-lived AI applications. He argued that the industry is a prone to overdoing the industry as many startups and tech companies advertise AI as a universal solution to complex problems. This has swelled ratings and unrealistic benchmarks. This led to projects that were disillusioned and abandoned when they were not satisfied.
Wang's critique suggests that the AI landscape is still in the experimental stage, and that many applications act as proof of concepts over scalable enterprise-grade tools. He warned that unless the industry shifts its focus from hype to substance, it will endanger a wave of obsolescence within the next five to ten years.
Calling for sustainable AI development
Despite his concerns, the king did not dismiss the entire AI. Instead, he sought a more measured and responsible approach to its development. He emphasized the importance of building AI systems that are not only technically sound, but also ethically align and adaptable to future needs.
Wang's statement reflects the growing perception in the tech industry that AI success relies not only on technological innovation, but also on integration with real applications and social expectations. His prediction that 90% of current AI applications could become outdated highlights the urgent need for a more sustainable and thoughtful approach to the future of artificial intelligence.
