Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s cabinet on Wednesday approved a decree regulating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by police, passed to comply with European regulations.
“Today, we approved measures that for the first time regulate the use of artificial intelligence by law enforcement agencies,” Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said at a press conference after the meeting.
“The goal is to provide police departments with cutting-edge capabilities that improve operational efficiency.
“This research proves that AI is an important tool to support police actions, without ever replacing human roles or decisions.
“The entire law is embedded in this principle.
“The use of artificial intelligence for security purposes must be reviewed and supervised by qualified humans.
“Furthermore, the protection of personal and sensitive data must be guaranteed.
“AI is a support tool, not an automated police officer. The final decision will always be made by humans.
“There are no plans for mass surveillance or a general ‘Big Brother’ system, and the use of large biometric databases is prohibited.”
He said that with permission from judicial authorities, it will be possible to use AI in cases of dangers such as terrorism and human trafficking, as well as for crime prevention after a crime has occurred.
“There are safety measures in place here as well,” Piantedosi said.
