MING Framework: Automated Edge AI Hardware Design | Dresden University of Technology – News and Statistics

According to a technical document from the Technical University of Dresden, researchers have introduced a framework named MING that is designed to automate the creation of hardware designs for edge computing devices. This effort addresses the migration of machine learning applications to edge platforms where field programmable gate arrays are preferred from an energy efficiency perspective.

This framework is based on multilevel intermediate representation and high-level synthesis tools and aims to overcome the limitations of current methods, which often ignore the severe resource limitations of edge hardware. MING implements a streaming architecture with managed buffers to handle these constraints while maintaining low-latency behavior.

When evaluated, we found that the MING framework provides improved performance over recent frameworks. We achieved an average speedup of 15x for standard convolutional neural network kernels with up to 4 layers and up to 200x for single-layer kernels. For kernels with larger inputs, the framework is reported to produce efficient designs within hardware limitations, an area where existing state-of-the-art frameworks face challenges.
