SINGAPORE, Jan 25: The Singapore government said on Saturday it will invest more than S$1 billion ($785 million) in public research in artificial intelligence until 2030 to strengthen its capabilities and become more globally competitive.
He said the fund will enable Singapore to establish “world-class” research centres, build capacity to support industrial applications of AI and develop talent through partnerships with overseas researchers and institutions.
The initiative, announced by Digital Development and Information Minister Josephine Theo at the AI Research Week Gala Dinner late Saturday, is the latest in a series of investments in AI by the government.

Mr Teo said the research center will focus on “long-term and difficult problems” that will benefit the country.
“We expect them to actively partner with others in our local ecosystem and internationally. We also hope that their research findings will be openly shared and contribute to the global knowledge commons,” she added.
Small Singapore, lacking natural resources compared to its larger neighbors, has increased its use of technology to meet its labor and other needs.
“Research will serve as a key operational driver in our country’s AI efforts, improving the country’s deep technological capabilities and ensuring Singapore remains at the forefront of AI innovation,” the ministry said in a statement.
