PlayStation is developing AI technology that helps you play video games and provides advice when you get stuck.
The 'AI-generated ghost player' patent was originally filed in 2024, but was recently updated (and discovered) Boing Boing). This technology allows players to call up NPCs to show them how to progress further in a video game or to take full control of their character if they get stuck in a video game.
According to the document, the AI technology will be trained using gameplay clips posted to YouTube and Twitch, as well as data uploaded to the PlayStation Network. It also allows you to respond in real-time to any challenges you face.
“In some cases, a ghost character provides limited assistance, in other cases, detailed and comprehensive assistance, and in other cases, a ghost character provides assistance along the game's abbreviated narrative that focuses on a specific feature or playstyle of the game,” Sony wrote. The AI character can also show you which buttons to press and in what order and have a conversation with you.
“The interactivity involved is about the context of the player's gameplay, not just the previous gameplay of other players. Ghost characters are therefore controlled by the assisting AL engine during gameplay and can visually illustrate how a particular game scenario is played so that the character controlled by the player can achieve progress in the game,” Sony added.

This news received various reactions from fans. “Sounds good, now I don't have to play the games I bought myself. What's next? Maybe the AI makes money and buys me the games I don't play anymore,” one player said.
“People will find it annoying, but it's no different than looking for a step-by-step guide or handing it to a friend or family member to help you. Just because you don't have a use for it doesn't mean someone else won't have a use for it lol. It saves you from having to search the internet for answers. It might be helpful for someone who needs it,” one Reddit user wrote. “There should also be an accessibility discussion here. There are some parts of the game where players are hindered because they are physically unable to perform the required tasks,” another user added.
Release details for the PlayStation AI Ghost character have not been confirmed. Last year, Microsoft shared its own AI-powered autopilot that provides players with hints and hints to overcome in-game obstacles.
