A new wave of EU-funded initiatives launched under the 2024 EU4Health Work Program is creating stronger, more intelligent and more connected digital healthcare services across the European Union.
These EU4Health projects cover artificial intelligence, cross-border data exchange and improvements to national digital infrastructure, and aim to strengthen patient care, improve system efficiency and prepare Europe for a more integrated health data environment.
Advances in safe and effective AI in healthcare
One of the major EU4Health projects currently underway is COMPASS-AI, which is designed to address the challenge of safe and secure use of artificial intelligence in healthcare. This project will bring together experts from a variety of fields to identify best practices for AI implementation in real-world clinical settings, with a particular focus on cancer care and the needs of remote communities.
COMPASS-AI will conduct pilot studies to test how AI tools can support diagnosis, treatment, and care pathways. We will also develop a digital platform for mapping real-world experiences with AI technology, helping healthcare providers, researchers and policy makers exchange insights and strengthen digital and AI literacy across Europe.
MyHealth@EU Infrastructure Enhancements
In parallel to COMPASS-AI, we have begun expanding and strengthening the eHealth Digital Services Infrastructure (eHDSI), better known as MyHealth@EU, with nine additional projects.
This EU-wide platform will enable citizens to securely access and download their health information in a portable digital format and use cross-border services such as e-prescriptions and patient summaries while traveling.
Together, these EU4Health projects are supported by €8.22 million in EU investment and support the European Health Data Space (EHDS) vision of making health data exchange seamless, secure and interoperable between all Member States.
Cross-border e-prescription and testing services
Several national EU4Health projects focus on improving or expanding cross-border digital health services.
- DVKA ePrescription B (Germany) is working to ensure that foreign visitors are recognized and can safely dispense e-prescriptions in Germany through the MyHealth@EU network.
- FLaReS (Finland) is creating a test result reporting service that enables cross-border exchange of test data, benefiting nationals traveling abroad and visitors seeking treatment in Finland.
- LT NCPeH eLAB (Lithuania) is expanding its cross-border test result services, improving operational stability and expanding the scope of services for laboratories and healthcare providers.
- MH4EU-ES-LR (Spain) aims to strengthen the MyHealth@EU service by adding secure cross-border exchange of test results to the country's already established e-prescription and patient summary systems.
- MyHealthCY (Cyprus) is strengthening its integration into MyHealth@EU by improving its cross-border e-prescription services and arranging the exchange of test results and medical images.
Building a nationwide contact point for the future
Several countries are laying the groundwork for full participation in MyHealth@EU.
- BE-NCPeH PS-A (Belgium) will establish a Belgian national contact point for eHealth and prepare a national ecosystem for cross-border health data exchange.
- RO-MI-LR-DR (Romania, launched in 2026) will develop services for medical images, laboratory data and discharge reports.
- EHDSIDenmark (from 2026) will implement and test a national contact point in Denmark that allows patient summaries and exchange of electronic prescriptions.
As Ukraine approaches EU membership, EU HEALS is helping the country align its digital health capabilities with EU standards. Activities include technical evaluation, regulatory preparation and the first pilot exchange of electronic prescriptions and patient summaries with Estonia.
