Meta acquires AI wearable startup Limitless

(Reuters) – Meta (META.O) has acquired Limitless, an AI wearable startup that makes pendant devices that record and transcribe real-world conversations, as the social media giant ramps up efforts to build AI-enabled consumer hardware.

“Meta recently announced a new vision to bring personal superintelligence to everyone. A key part of that vision is building amazing AI-powered wearables. We share this vision, and we're joining Meta to help realize our shared vision,” Limitless co-founder and CEO Dan Siroker said in a blog post on Friday.

Limitless did not disclose financial details of the transaction.

Earlier this week, Meta hired longtime Apple (AAPL.O) design executive Alan Dye, a move widely seen as furthering its focus on next-generation devices. Meta plans to leverage Limitless' technological capabilities as part of its development of next-generation AI-enabled wearables.

Meta is currently partnering with Ray-Ban and Oakley under the EssilorLuxottica (ESLX.PA) brand to produce AI-powered smart glasses.

“We are excited to have Limitless join Meta and accelerate our efforts to develop AI-enabled wearables,” a Meta spokesperson told Reuters.

Limitless, formerly known as Rewind, makes wearable “pendants” that clip onto clothing or straps. The device can record conversations and generate transcripts or create searchable summaries through a companion app. It's part of a growing category of AI assistants designed to improve memory and everyday productivity.

Meta and Limitless will continue to support existing users, but Limitless said it will no longer sell devices to new customers. Existing users will be asked to agree to the revised Privacy Terms in order to maintain their service.

Limitless has raised more than $33 million from investors including Sam Altman and A16z.
