AI For Business

Edinburgh-based AI and data consultancy Optima Partners has received new investment from Growth Capital Partners (GCP) as it looks to expand in the UK and Europe. Founded in 2013, the consulting firm specializes in AI-based business transformation across sectors including financial services, insurance, energy, communications, and life sciences.

GCP funding will support Optima’s strategic growth initiatives. The company said this includes further development of its customer service, product and service portfolio, marketing efforts and internal talent development. The additional capital is aimed at Optima strengthening its market position both within the UK and across Europe.

Optima works with enterprise customers to address their challenges using business strategy, machine learning, AI, and advanced engineering. Its approach focuses on three interrelated goals: maximizing customer value through personalization, improving operations through AI-powered decision-making, and building a robust data foundation for growth. Optima’s bioXcelerate AI division powers our efforts in healthcare and life sciences.

leadership and growth

The company’s expansion has accelerated since 2021 following a partnership between founder Alan Crowley and Dr. Chris Foley, whose advanced mathematics background underpins the company’s AI capabilities. Optima also secured investment from BGF in 2022. Management and its investors have worked together to expand the consulting firm’s reach and service offerings, particularly among large corporate clients.

Alan Crowley, founder of Optima Partners, said: “Since our launch, Optima has gone from strength to strength, expanding our capabilities, growing our team and deepening our impact across a variety of key areas. The launch of AI was a major milestone that reflects the scale of the opportunity as organizations seek to make better use of their data and advanced analytics. The support and continued support from BGF has helped us reach this stage of growth. ”

“This investment from GCP marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. It gives us momentum to build on our success, accelerate our plans, and continue developing the capabilities that will define the next stage of Optima’s journey.”

Rationale for investment

GCP is focused on knowledge-based businesses and views Optima’s combination of technical expertise and business strategy as an asset. Optima’s customer roster includes leading organizations applying data and AI to achieve measurable business outcomes.

CEO Chris Foley said: “We are firmly focused on enabling Optima’s next phase of growth. GCP’s investment is a strong validation of our mission to help clients quickly turn their data, analytics, and AI strategies into measurable outcomes. This funding will enable us to accelerate our innovation track record, further invest in our people, and strengthen the infrastructure needed to support our clients at greater scale.”

“This partnership will help organizations understand, adapt, and enhance human and data-driven decision-making supported by AI, bridging academic foundations and industry-focused, value-based impact.”

Richard Shaw, GCP Partner, said, “Alan, Chris, and the broader Optima team have built a highly differentiated business at the intersection of advanced data science, machine learning, and enterprise transformation. As organizations increasingly seek to leverage data and accelerate AI adoption, Optima is uniquely positioned to help address mission-critical challenges and drive meaningful commercial outcomes.”

“The business is already demonstrating impressive momentum and scale, underpinned by strong leadership, deep technical skill sets and robust industry expertise. We are delighted to partner with the team on this exciting stage of their journey. We look forward to working together to strengthen our go-to-market capabilities, strengthen our organizational infrastructure and expand our delivery capabilities in this rapidly growing and strategically important sector.”

“Since our initial investment in 2022, Optima has experienced extraordinary growth and development, both in terms of its ability to revolutionize data usage and advanced analytics for teams and organizations,” said Richard Pugh, an investor at BGF.

“This is a great result for both BGF and the Optima team. Our backing supports Alan’s ambitious vision and, combined with Chris’ expertise and direction, the business is ideally placed to pick up the pace and seize the huge opportunities arising with AI and data.”

“It has been a pleasure to work with Alan and Chris over the years, and I look forward to continuing to support them as a minority shareholder and support the company as it embarks on its next phase of growth with GCP,” said Pugh.
