Yang Huang(opens in new window)Associate Professor of Business Technology, Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University(opens in new window)received an Amazon Research Award(opens in new window) For research on fairness in artificial intelligence (AI).
Huang joins 78 other recipients of the award, which provides unlimited funding and promotional credits to support research in multiple fields for academic institutions and nonprofits. The laureate he represents her 54 universities in 14 countries.
“I am very honored to receive this award from Amazon in recognition of my research on bias in AI,” said Huang.
“Algorithm bias is a growing concern. Algorithms are often trained using human-generated data, so how machine learning inherits different kinds of human bias and We need to decide how to improve fairness from an operational and technical perspective.”
Awards were awarded in four categories. AWS AI(opens in new window) (Amazon Web Services is part of Amazon Science), automatic reasoning(opens in new window)prime video(opens in new window),sustainability(opens in new window). Proposals were reviewed for the quality of their scientific content and potential impact on the research community and society.
Huang won the AWS AI category by working with Beibei Li.(opens in new window)Associate Professor of IT and Management, Heinz Information Systems and Public Policy College, CMU(opens in new window);Xiyang Hu, PhD Information Systems student(opens in new window) at CMU. and Tian Lu, a former postdoctoral fellow at Heinz University and currently an assistant professor of information systems at Arizona State University. Their work is titled “Combating Algorithmic Bias Inherited from Human Decision Making: Human and AI Perspectives.”
This project also led to a research paper on SSRN titled “Human-Algorithmic Bias: Source, Evolution, and Impact” co-authored by Huang with Hu, Li, and Lu.(opens in new window)

“In the recent boom in new technologies, machine learning algorithms are replacing humans in many important decision-making,” Bajoux-Benainou said. “Understanding biases in AI is an important step in correcting them.”
