HYDERABAD: A diplomatic spat erupted online on Thursday after Britain’s High Commissioner to Pakistan criticized an Indian speaker for withdrawing from a debate titled “India’s policy towards Pakistan is a populist strategy sold as a security policy” at the Oxford Union.
The High Commission’s tweet claimed that India had lost in a “walkover” and named former army chiefs MM Naravane, Subramanian Swamy and Congress leader Sachin Pilot among those expected to participate.
A video has gone viral in which Sachin Pilot appears to claim that he was ready for a discussion at the Oxford Union, but that the Indian delegation had left on instructions from the central government.
The text overlaid on the video read: “Sachin Pilot participates in Oxford Union debate.”
An X user posted a clip with the caption, “My report from yesterday was confirmed by Sachin Pilot. The Indian delegation’s strike happened due to pressure from the Modi government. Why is the Bharatiya Janata Party humiliating my India on the world stage? (sic)” (Archived)

If you look closely at the visual, you can see the India Today logo in the top right corner. A Google reverse image search for keyframes found the original footage uploaded by India Today on October 5.
The video is titled ‘Sachin Pilot Refuses Jail Visit to NSUI Rajasthan President, Detained After RSS Protest | India Today’. It shows Pilot addressing the media about NSUI Rajasthan President Vinod Jakhar who was detained after protests related to RSS event.
The full report explains that Sachin Pilot tried to meet Jakhar inside the prison but was denied permission. The pilot was heard talking about Mr Jakhar’s arrest, the charges filed against him and his belief that the judicial process would soon allow him to meet with the NSUI leadership. At no point in the original video does he mention the Oxford Union debate, Pakistan, government pressure, or international events.
Video analysis
Comparing the two videos, you can clearly see that none of the lines heard in the viral clip were present in the original footage. The tone, pace, and lip movements do not match the pilot’s actual speech, indicating that the audio was artificially generated and placed over real footage.
To further verify authenticity, NewsMeter analyzed the viral clip using its AI detection platform Deepfake-O-Meter. The company’s four detectors flagged the video as containing AI-generated content with confidence scores of 92.7%, 92.9%, 99.3%, and 89%. This is a strong indication that the viral audio was synthetically created.

It was also learned that Supreme Court lawyer J Sai Deepak posted a detailed chronology of events on his X account on November 28, refuting Pakistan’s claims. He explained that there was no strike as claimed by the Pakistan High Commission.
