Pantone Announces Pantone Palette Generator Built on Microsoft Azure OpenAI to Accelerate Design Workflows within Pantone Connect

– Pantone, a global color authority and provider of digital solutions for the design community, and Microsoft Corp. are collaborating to lead creators and designers into the future, with a growing focus on artificial intelligence to power their technology. Pantone on Wednesday announced the beta version of the Pantone Palette Generator. This is a new tool built using Microsoft Azure OpenAI that brings Pantone’s expertise in color psychology and trend forecasting to an intelligent, interactive experience within Pantone Connect.

Pantone Palette Generator is a chat-based interface integrated into Pantone Connect, Pantone’s digital platform for designers that streamlines color decision-making and communication. Leveraging decades of expertise and research from Pantone Color Institute’s color and trend experts with advanced conversational AI technology, Palette Generator helps users accelerate the design research and inspiration stage by exploring color palettes, leveraging trend prediction data, and generating design concepts within Pantone Connect. Palette Generator allows designers to create palettes in seconds by drawing thousands of colors from Pantone’s vast color library.

“For more than 60 years, Pantone has helped creators make important color decisions with confidence throughout the design process,” said Skye Kelly, President of Pantone. “By collaborating with Microsoft, we wanted to create a tool that activates the research, discovery, and inspiration stages of the design process and helps designers efficiently integrate color and trend data as they bring their visions to life.”

Now available for Pantone Connect users, the Palette Generator provides instant color palettes newly built based on user instructions, while also revealing the predictive work used to inform the tool, enabling fast, inspiration-driven workflows. Powered by Retrieval-Augmented Generation and agent technology, Palette Generator semantically searches Pantone’s Color Insider and Trend Forecast articles to deliver palettes based on insights from the Pantone Color Institute. During the open beta phase, the Palette Generator is available to all Pantone Connect users, including those with free (basic) accounts.

Kathleen Mitford, Corporate Vice President, Global Industry Marketing, Microsoft. “Pantone is showing the world what it means to lead with AI. It means transforming an industry that has long been based on physical design.” “Together, we are using Azure OpenAI to accelerate design workflows and show how AI can enable new levels of creativity, productivity, and innovation across all industries.”

Add Pantone Color Institute insights to designers’ toolboxes using AI

The palette generator is drawn from a rich dataset curated by Pantone’s color scientists, psychologists, and trend forecasters at the Pantone Color Institute, and allows users to prompt the assistant with questions like, “What colors evoke optimism in Gen Z?” or “Show me a palette inspired by 1970s fashion magazines.” The assistant responds with suggested color palettes based on Pantone’s proprietary research and global trend insights.

The solution is built on Microsoft technologies such as Azure AI Foundry, Azure AI Search, Azure OpenAI, and Azure Cosmos DB to ensure scalability, security, and seamless cross-platform integration while protecting content, supporting multilingualism, and laying the foundation for future innovation.

Palette Generator currently supports Pantone’s fashion, home, and interiors libraries, but we plan to expand to a complete library in the near future. User-created palettes can be added directly to Pantone Connect and instantly analyzed, downloaded, and shared for collaborative design workflows, saving research time while inspiring creative exploration.

From now on, users will be able to leverage the palette generator to include palettes for the upcoming Pantone Color of the Year 2026 and all past Pantone Colors of the Year.

Digital transformation for the future of creative workflows

As Pantone continues to invest in its digital product suite, it’s focused on tools that power the future of creative workflows. In addition to the new palette generator, Pantone has added new features within the Adobe extension such as design mode, improved navigation and reduced click paths based on user feedback.
