The Somali textbook includes a text from the state, “The Battle of Karshaal 2011, when the Somaliland Army was defeated.”

The Kalshaale conflict in 2011 was a violent conflict between the security forces of Somaliland and the SSC-Khaatumo militia in eastern Somaliland near Buuhoodle. The conflict is attributed to years of territorial disputes and clan competition in the Sur region. Reports show that the conflict has resulted in casualties, evacuation and destruction of property.

But is the video real?

Pesacheck took a screenshot from the still frame of the video and performed a Google reverse image search. The search did not return a trusted match linking the clip to a 2011 Kalshaale conflict.

Also, visual reviews reveal multiple AI-style anomalies. Some of the “soldiers” appear to be angled their rifles towards their bodies, not towards their opponent's position. Their legs and arms move closer to the same cycle.

The camerawork has a smooth, cinematic slip that doesn't match the volatile ad hoc capture typical of 2011's real frontline footage. Overall, motion, lighting, and physics do not act like a real battlefield recording.

To support the manual review, Pesacheck analyzed the clips on Deepfake-O-Meter. The tool detector ensemble flags the video as AI generated, with the overall result being 100% AI likelihood.

Pesacheck did a keyword search to see if the video was filmed from the Kalshaale event, and found no reliable reports linking the clips.

Pesacheck is considering a Facebook video claiming to show Kalshaale's 2011 conflict and found it to be partially incorrect.
