New Delhi: Facing a political fire, the Bihar Conference on Friday began an internal investigation to identify and punish people who shared AI-generated videos on social media that appear to show characters similar to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother Heeraben.
The leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) saw the clip as a “new low” in political discourse, saying that he crossed ethical boundaries by laughing at the deceased and lightly paring motherhood.
“This party has become “Galiwadi” instead of “Gandiwadi”. The Congress, far from regret, justified the Prime Minister's abuse with lies,” said Shehzad Poonawalla, a national spokesman for the BJP in X, calling the video “disgusting” and “shameful.”
Parliamentary Speaker Kiren Riziju claimed that Congress could not learn “even after being rejected by the people” had demonstrated a collapsed moral compass and predicted the party's continued election loss.
“The Congress Party is suffering from social bias in politics. There is a widespread infection like creating an AI video of the Prime Minister's late mother during Pitl Paksha. Such comments are a shameful tragedy to our ancestors. Congress has reached the pinnacle of shamelessness.”
Congress leaders argued that the clip was intended as a satire about the campaign's tactics, not a personal attack. They questioned whether the BJP was suppressing objections ahead of the election.
“It is the parents' duty to educate a child. She (Prime Minister Modi's late mother) is only educating her child, and if the child thinks it is rude to him, it is his headache,” said Congress leader Pawan Kehera.
On Wednesday, the Bihar Pradesh Assembly Committee published a 36-second clip marked “AI generated” depicting a character similar to Prime Minister Modi, who dreams of his late mother.
In the clip, the mother olds the PM for calling her name for the benefit of the election, and laughs out loud at the “voting choli (voting theft)” tactic.
BJP MP, originally from Hamirpur in Anurag Thakur, described the AI video as “inhumous” of Bihar's cultural heritage. He linked the episode to previous abusive slogans he raised against Heeraben Modi in the Congress RJD “Voters Adakal Yatra” in Darbanga.
Bihar police arrested Mohammad Rizvi alias Raja in late August and arrested him on suspicion of making comments about Prime Minister Modi and his late mother.
Thakur has reiterated the statements of other BJP leaders that Bihar voters will provide “appropriate responses” to such “shameful” behavior through EVM.
Meanwhile, despite ordering an internal investigation, Congress aims to portray the BJP's reaction as an opportunistic victim, claiming that the video debate will distract attention from ground level complaints in the hinterland of Bihar.
Assembly elections are expected in Bihar later this year.
