Research field
The Aithyra-CEMM PhD program focuses on the subject areas of infection, immunity, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, network medicine, patient-derived organoids, bioengineering and aging research. A special emphasis is placed on large-scale linguistic model- or graph-based methods for the integration of multimodal biological data, the development of deep learning, and biological discovery for molecular and cellular networks. The technical foundations further comprise systems biology, virology, high-throughput genetics, genomics and proteomics, molecular and cell biology, high-content automated imaging, chemical biology, and organic chemical synthesis.
program
Our goal is to enable AI/ML and Life Science students to successfully design, execute, manage and explain contemporary AI-driven molecular medicine research projects through highly participatory and interactive programs. This program is conceptualized in three “modes”: collection, connection, and contribution. These guide the scientific excellence of data generation and validation into responsibility and professional scientific citizenship.
Host Research Institute
Aithyra and CEMM are sister laboratories with the same principles of excellence, competitiveness, internationality and mentoring and training, operating in their own supercouperation mode. Biology is related to medicine, experiments in calculations, discovery with translation, and science with society and the arts.
Aitaira's mission It is a radical transformation of biomedical science by embedding artificial intelligence as a co-pilot throughout the scientific process from hypothesis generation and experimental design to biological interpretation and therapeutic innovation. Through the consistent integration of AI/ml across biological measures, the goal is to improve understanding of the root causes of disease, diagnosis, and conceptualization of new treatment strategies, whilst stimulating new innovations in AI/ML. To create enough data to support AI applications, Aithyra invests in experimental automation through the Robotics Laboratory infrastructure. This research programme applies widely to life sciences but focuses on cancer, immunology, infectious diseases and neurodegenerative disorders. Aithyra is located in Marxbox on the Vienna Bio Centre campus, co-led by Michael Bronstein (AI Science Director), Georg Winter (Life Science Director), and Anita Ender (Managing Director). https://www.oeaw.ac.at/aithyra
CEMM's mission It is to achieve the greatest scientific innovation in molecular medicine to improve healthcare. At CEMM, an international and creative team of scientists and physicians pursue basic life science research with freedom and heart in a large, vibrant hospital environment of outstanding medical traditions and practices. The CEMM research is based on postgenome technology and focuses on socially important diseases such as immune disorders and infectious diseases, cancer, metabolic disorders and aging. The goal of CEMM is to pioneer the science of fostering accurate, personalized, predictive, preventive medicine for the future. CEMM is the largest outdoor space in Europe, co-led by Giulio Supertifulga (Chief of Science) and Anita Ender (Management Director), located in the heart of Vienna's largest medical campus, located in the heart of Vienna. https://cemm.at/
Vienna has repeatedly been ranked among the best cities in the world and is a UN city with a large international English-speaking community. The official language of Aithyra and CEMM is English, and 50 different nationalities are currently represented by the Institute.
