Companies like Meta, Openai and Anthropic have surprised the summer with AI talent.
David Luan told Verge's “Decoder” podcast that he will put under 1,000 people worldwide in the talent bracket of less than 150 people with Frontier AI Lab's “Great Dollar Calculation.”
However, Luang said that some juniors can still rank frontier AI in three to four years by asking the right questions, finding out the problem of “no one has an answer” and becoming an expert on the specific subdomain of AI.
“I think it's really counterintuitive. Very few people really know what they're doing,” he said, adding, “it's very easy for years to be someone who knows what they're doing.”
Luan, who helped build an early version of ChatGpt at Openai, said juniors from other fields such as Quant Finance and Physics can “make a big difference” when they join AI companies.
He also said that people early in their careers should join AI companies early in their careers so that they can try their ideas and go somewhere with a “strong product sense” of how people embed AI into their lives.
In addition to San Francisco's leading Amazon AGI Lab, Luan is the company's vice president of the company. He joined Amazon in 2024 and led the artificial general information effort after the company acquired his startup, Adept.
He told the “Decoder” podcast that he defined artificial general information as “a model that can help humans do whatever they want on a computer.”
