Google LLC has introduced an artificial intelligence tool that allows users to build simple applications without writing code.
A tool known as opal, I've made my debut Thursday. The launch comes just a few weeks after Amazon Web Services Inc. deploys an IDE or integrated development environment. This is called Kiro, which uses AI to speed up software projects.
The starting point for the Opal Development project is a chatbot interface like ChatGPT. The user enters a natural language description for the tasks the application performs. It also provides additional data needed to complete the task, and can connect external tools.
This service automatically generates simple applications using the data provided. Once the software is ready, users can share it via a button in the top right corner of the interface. You can access the application through a shared link similar to that used in Google Docs.
Optionally, workers can edit the opal generation application before publishing using the Visual Editor. Editors represent the application as a collection of cards on a virtual canvas. Some cards describe the inputs that an application ingests, while others control how that input is processed.
The Visual Editor allows you to link multiple data processing steps. For example, users can generate a product description for their application and then create a promotional video based on that description. Workers can customize how these tasks are performed by entering natural language instructions through Opal's Visual Editor.
“Opal converts app descriptions into a multi-step workflow with input, generation and output steps,” explained Google Product Manager Elle Zadina. Demo Video. “You can click on the instructions to display a prompt or instruction and edit it directly.”
Under the hood, Opal relies on multiple AI models to generate applications. Google did not specify which algorithm it was using. One of the candidates is the large-scale language model of the Gemini 2.5 Pro, which the company recently introduced. This is particularly proficient in application development tasks. We have set a record of the popular Lmarena benchmarks for measuring LLMS coding skills.
Given that Opal is directed at creating simple applications, it may not require the advance programming capabilities offered by Gemini 2.5 Pro. Google may be using less capable but more power-efficient coding models to power the tools. Opal's clip generation capabilities are probably based on one of the company's VEO video algorithms.
Opal is deployed with over a half dozen pre-built applications. Some focus on consumer use cases such as video game design. The rest allows workers to generate marketing materials, study products, and perform other business tasks.
At launch, Opal will be available to US users through the public beta program. The tool allows you to access Search Giant's experimental AI products from over 20 web pages, Google Labs. Automate tasks from web searching to generating application interface designs.
