Openai's new ChatGPT agent feature provides a new way to use ChatGPT and melts some of its familiar features. The results will transform AI chatbots and give you many ways to accomplish real-world tasks while increasing some of the roles they already play for many people.
Essentially, ChatGpt agents don't just talk about performing tasks. With minimal guidance, deep research and execution can be combined in a single project. This is another way of thinking about using AI tools, and it's useful to keep some of them in mind when using ChatGPT agents.
AI Autopilot

A normal ChatGpt is, in a sense, like having a conversation with a research librarian. You can ask for help from it, and it shares knowledge, but not on your behalf. You can complete those chores and guide them to tell them what type or click, but that's it.
With ChatGpt Agent it's like having a research librarian with a laptop that allows you to type and click. You can navigate the website, sign in (when providing login), fill out the form, check out and make a purchase. ChatGpt usually stops giving instructions. Agents cross the finish line.
For example, I wanted to surprise my wife with a new houseplant and do it right away. I put ChatGpt in agent mode and asked to “find and buy same-day delivery under $30 if possible.” In a few minutes, it sifted through my town's plant stores, picking the best options, filling out the checkout form, and clicking “Buy” after filling out the payment form. AI ended by notifying me that the order had been placed and the tracking number had been emailed to me. It's autonomy that you don't get with normal chatgpt.
Research and execution

The ChatGPT function is usually singular. You can create large reports with deep research, but you will need to open the canvas to get editable documents. And to actually act in the browser, you will have to do it yourself or pay for Openai's operator tools. Currently, you can request and execute tasks simultaneously.
For example, if you want to go on a road trip, you can ask ChatGpt agent to plan a two-hour drive that you can book now, a budget-friendly scenic Saturday outing. Agents will create a comprehensive report on ideas, from official guidebooks to online forums and local blogs, and dig deep into everything that will enter the best ideas into the available itinerary. After that, you can also click on the booking site, enter your name and number of guests, select a time slot, book a parking space, and check in to confirm your purchase.
Transparent thinking
Using a certain mode of ChatGPT, you can see the logic behind that thought, but usually only the final response is shown. The ChatGpt agent integrates its narration into more than just a mathematical problem. It explains that inference to choose which apps to take advantage of, the options to filter, or the vendor to buy.
I asked my agent to help me find the cheapest healthy snack subscription box available in the US. Usually, looking at the answer and its price, the agent went through the entire process for me. Immediately I asked, “Should I proceed to a subscription?”
In other words, agents don't just summarise their conclusions. It went through inference and proposed the next step. I might want to show you the logic of that request.
Self-measurement

If you ask ChatGpt something, it may only get right. It blindly follows what you wrote at your prompt, whether it is suspicious or not. Using the chatgpt agent gives AI a kind of conscience. It will be self-corrected before you execute an order that appears vague or an instruction that may not be black and white in your mind.
For testing, I asked, “I'll make a 4-hour audio comedy marathon playlist, but there's no stand-up.” Instead of shaking my Spotify account without any thought and presenting a playlist, and ignoring the rules or making the list shorter than I wanted, I pause while I work and say, “There's a mixed playlist that contains stand-up, but I think your instructions said stand-up. That's a bit of thought and flexibility for tasks that are still going on. It's a good alternative to having to rewrite the first prompt over and over again to respond to reality.
Normal Life AI
Most of the AI agent demos I've seen focus on corporate travel, market research, slide decks, and writing apps to sell. It's certainly convenient, but there's hardly any cocktail party conversation. ChatGpt agents are sold equally as lifestyle companions, as you can see from the type of prompt I've tried. However, ChatGpt does not provide the ability to enjoy this kind of power, or even endure frivolous use, before creating an agent feature.
As Theorteical, I asked to “plan a themed movie night for me and two friends.” It asked about genre and dietary preferences and I described a couple nerd friend with some allergies. AI has put together the SCI‑FI triple features and found a local grocery site that orders both vegan popcorn, gummy worms, and ingredients for both alcohol and mocktail, just in case everyone is driving.
Whether it's dinner or gift shopping, the versatility of personal moments can be key to Openai's efforts that stand out in the user's personal life. Instead of an enterprise account that just plans a business pitch, people can use it to coordinate surprise birthday scavenger hunts with gifts, gift wrap instructions, and delivery estimates all in one conversation. If people start to think of AI, especially ChatGpt, as something that is in the living room as well as the boardroom, they are more willing to pay for it, or at least pay at least more queries with ChatGPT agents.
