Using Builders' Artificial Intelligence

Applications of AI

The majority of single-family home builders currently do not use artificial intelligence (AI) in their businesses. In the best applications, 20% of builders use AI to generate advertising/marketing materials and 11% to help analyze market/planning projects. Currently, we use this tool to help with 10 other business functions, from designing a project to running automated construction equipment in the chart below. These findings stem from a July 2025 survey by the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) and reflect early industry readings that could evolve over the next few years.

Builders who are not currently using AI were asked about their chances of doing so over the next two years (using a scale of 1 to 5). Naturally, the two areas that are most likely to see new builders employing AI are advertising/marketing material generation (average rating 3.6) and market/planning project analysis (3.0).

On the other hand, the chances of builders using AI in one of the other business functions are much less likely, as all 10 received an average likelihood rating of less than 3.0. The two areas where builders are least likely to start using AI in the next two years are automated construction equipment operations (average rating: 1.7) and interacting with the local building or planning department (1.9).
