Netflix signs up for the first time to reduce costs and increase creativity

Netflix says it was the first time in one of its original television shows to use visual effects created by Generated Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Streaming Giant's co-selection Sarandos said AI, which creates videos and images based on prompts, was used to create scenes of crumbling buildings in The Eternauts, an Argentine science fiction show.

He praised the technology as “an incredible opportunity to help creators make films and series better, not cheaper.”

The use of generative AI has been controversial in the entertainment industry and has caused fear of replacing human work.

Comments are 16% higher than last year's same period after it announced revenue of $11.08 billion (£8.25 billion) for the three months leading up to the end of June.

Netflix said the above-expected performance was boosted by the success of the third and final series of Korean thriller squid games.

When asked about Netflix's AI use, Sarandos said the technology has enabled lower budget productions to use advanced visual effects.

Generation AI used at Eternauts helped production teams complete sequences 10 times faster than traditional special effects tools, he said.

“That cost wouldn't have been feasible for that budget show.”

“That sequence is actually the first one [generative] The final AI footage displayed on the screen in the Netflix original series or film. So the creators were excited by the outcome,” Sarandos said.

AI was one of the key concerns raised during the 2023 Hollywood strike.

During the three-month strike, the Screen Actors Guild – the Federation of American Television and Radio Artists, called for stricter regulations on the use of AI.
