Github CEO Thomas Dohmke said companies that use AI to use it are not using it to replace human labor. Instead, they will increase the employment of more and more efficient engineers.
“The smartest companies are going to hire more developers,” Dohmke said in an episode of “The Silicon Valley Girl Podcast.”
“Because if you make one developer 10 times more, 10 developers can do 100 times more,” he said.
Dohmke said it has made AI much easier to learn how to program, simplifying the process for people who are already experts. He added that as technology continues to evolve, so does the capabilities of engineers.
“The most frustrating thing when you're learning something is that you're stuck somewhere, so you don't have anybody in your home, family, or friends, so you can help with that. “So when AI says it's democratizing access, that's what we mean. Anyone who wants to learn that can learn that can learn that.”
That doesn't mean there's no market for professionals either, Dohmke said. GitHub CEO said people may have better equipment to take advantage of personal purpose coding, but in the business sector, they will need deeper knowledge of crafts to make the most of AI.
“I think the idea that AI without coding skills can be misunderstood just by building a billion-dollar business,” he said. “If that's the case, everyone would do that.”
While some companies are putting the brakes on hiring layoffs and implementing layoffs while leaning towards AI, especially in the tech industry, Dohmke believes it's only a matter of time before they realize that hiring more engineers is a great deal.
“I think it's a temporary effect right now. This is a natural short-term conclusion. We're trying to stabilize things and figure out how the market will develop,” Dohmke says. “But I think you'll see people very quickly saying, 'Well, if there's another, another productive developer, why don't you hire another, why don't you hire another developer?” ”
Dohmke said he has yet to see companies completely eliminate developer workloads, despite programmers using AI to move projects faster.
“AI is already adding more work to the backlog. We don't see companies saying, 'Well, we're draining all the backlogs and there's almost nothing left,” he said.
Dohmke also said that becoming a developer was “the most exciting time” and that the programming process has ultimately changed for the better.
“My dream of developing software was to always take the idea that it's in my head on Sunday mornings. By the evening, I have my apps running on my phone,” he said.
