Rourkela: The Chakradharpur division of the Southeast Railway will implement an artificial intelligence-based elephant intrusion detection system (EIDS) to prevent train accidents involving animals on railway tracks. The system, successfully tested along the Balabham Bhu Chakradurpurrotapahar section on June 15th and 16th, will be installed in elephant corridors such as Jalekera, Barrata, Barsuan and Bimuragar regions.“The tests have been carried out by a variety of companies and have been successful. The system that provides the best coverage for elephant protection will be chosen for installation from future bidders. This could happen in the coming months.”Eids uses a combination of pressure wave sensors, fiber optic cables and AI algorithms to detect approaching elephants. When an elephant is detected near a track, the system automatically alerts railway personnel, guiding incoming trains to slow or stop, preventing potential collisions. For trial, two elephants from Vantala, a rescue of the wildlife in Gujarat, were brought to Chakradarpur. The test was conducted under the supervision of railway staff in the Chakradharpur division.
