A search is underway for outstanding young scientists who are tackling some of the most pressing social and environmental challenges in the Asia-Pacific region, where cross-border research in artificial intelligence (AI) and biotechnology is tackling some of the most pressing social and environmental challenges.
The nominations are open to the 2025 APEC Science Award for Innovation, Research and Education, or the Aspire Prize under the theme of “AI-Bio Convergence: Solving AI-Bio Convergence Social Issues.” In line with APEC 2025's focus on digital innovation and inclusive growth, this year's theme highlights the potential of AI-driven biotechnology to improve regional overall health equity, food security, sustainable agriculture and environmental resilience.
“This year's Aswair theme reflects the growing need for policy-related science that bridges disciplines and boundaries,” said Rahima Kandahari, chairman of the APEC Policy Partnership on Science, Technology and Innovation (PPSTI).
“By highlighting the convergence of AI and biotechnology, we aim to focus our attention on innovations that can provide practical and comprehensive solutions to complex regional challenges, reinforcing the importance of scientific cooperation and innovation in fostering the goals of shared APEC.”
Each APEC economy may nominate one scientist under the age of 40 for an annual award. Candidates will be evaluated for academic publications and the excellence of scientific research, as evidenced by their commitment to economic collaboration, especially in interdisciplinary projects that are in line with the theme of the year.
“Korea is extremely important to strengthen young researchers' development of innovative solutions to address complex global challenges. That's why we are proud to support this year's Aspire Award, which recognizes the excellence of interdisciplinary science across borders.”
“AI-Bio Convergence is an important emerging technology that has the potential to change how the economy deals with long-standing issues such as aging, health inequality and sustainable agriculture,” fans added.
In its 15th year, the Aspire Award supports the broader goal of strengthening APEC's science and technology cooperation, strengthening the innovation ecosystem and promoting sustainable and inclusive growth. Past recipients have contributed to advancements in areas such as nutrition, renewable energy, nanotechnology, and public health.
Recent recipients include Dr. Zheng Liu of Singapore. He received the 2023 Aspire Award for his pioneering work on two-dimensional materials for sustainable energy and advanced electronics. Dr. Zinzen Leng of Hong Kong, China, won the 2022 Award for developing a new model that balances economic development with environmental sustainability. Both illustrate the power of cross-border scientific cooperation to solve regional and global challenges.
This year's award recipients will receive US$25,000, winning prizes provided by the South Korean Ministry of Science and ICT, and will be recognized at a conference held in Korea on August 13th, 2025.
Nominations must be submitted at 5:30pm in Singapore by July 1, 2025. For eligibility requirements and submission guidelines, please visit the Aspire 2025 webpage or contact the PPSTI representative of the economy.
