Since 2024, the government has launched an initiative called “SmartView” to install closed televisions in public places with crime rates and pedestrian flows to help prevent crime, detect, and preserve public order and safety.
The government and police are also showing plans to integrate AI facial recognition technology into these CCTV systems over the next few years.
A similar plan has been extended towards enforcement of traffic violations, with Automated Traffic Enforcement Systems (ATEs) recently implemented in Central and Kunton, with the CCTV system analyzing vehicle dynamics in real time with the help of AI, identify crimes, record traffic license plates and/or violation vehicles violations, and provide the Department of Transportation proposals and target enforcement proposals.
These initiatives are consistent with many other jurisdictions that have recently begun to deploy AI facial recognition technology for these exact same purposes.
In the UK, for example, London metropolitan police use facial recognition technology to prevent and detect crime.
This includes live facial recognition, which includes cameras targeting a particular area, and images are compared to capture, streaming, and watchlists. It also implements a retrospective facial recognition system. This allows authorities to search for short videos against CCTV, images, or custody image databases.
