Santa Clara University's Faculty of Engineering has announced a new Master of Science degree in Artificial Intelligence (MSAI), scheduled to begin in fall 2025. The program is designed to provide practical technical training with AI to students while embedding ethical decision-making throughout the curriculum.
Located in Santa Clara University's Silicon Valley, it offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in multiple fields, including engineering. Its engineering department operates as a research and innovation hub, engaging with local tech companies and emphasizing value-based education based on Jesuit identity.
Dual-track curriculum tailored to the student's background
The MSAI program has two centralized areas: Computer Science and Engineering (CSEN) and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECEN), providing students with a wide range of academic and professional experiences.
CSEN tracks cover AI algorithms and software principles, while Ecen tracks focus on hardware integrated AI systems such as embedded devices, robotics, and chip design. Both follow a unified curriculum structure with courses in Fumpeople practicals, including mathematics, machine learning, ethics and external projects with Silicon Valley partners.
Kendra Sharp, dean of the Faculty of Engineering, said: “Santa Clara's new MSAI program is a bold step in preparing the next generation of AI leaders. What sets the program apart is the deep integration of software and hardware track, ethical training, and opportunities for AI practice with Silicon Valley partners.
The programme aligns with the SCU's strategic vision
This degree is based on faculty members from both computer science and engineering, electrical and computer engineering departments. It also supports the university's Impact 2030 plan to promote the use of ethical technology, interdisciplinary education and industry collaboration.
Yi Fang, director of Santa Clara's responsible AI initiative, said: “Artificial intelligence is evolving rapidly and needs to evolve responsibly. Through the MSAI program, students will be able to technically acquire the social impact of AI and create critical and reliable technologies.”
