AI is here, and Apple is finally getting going with the introduction of Apple Intelligence due later this year, but you don't have to wait to start experimenting with AI on your smartphone or tablet – Android is included, too.
There are already plenty of apps with AI-powered features, but here are some more chatbot-style options for your preferred mobile platform, from Claude and ChatGPT to offerings from tech giants like Gemini and Copilot.
Here is an overview of the best AI apps out there right now.
Claude of Anthropology

- Price: Free/$20/month
- Platform: iOS
Anthropic's Claude app, currently available only on iOS after debuting on the platform last month, provides an AI assistant to help analyze data, write text, and do pretty much anything else.
It also has a great feature of remembering previous conversations so you don't have to start over every time.
OpenAI Chat GPT

- Price: Free/$20/month
- Platform: iOS/Android
ChatGPT from OpenAI, one of the pioneers in generative AI, is free to use for users of GPT 3.5, but gives you access to 4 and 4o if you opt for the Plus plan.
The chatbot itself is robust, but it also uses custom GPT and DALL-E image generation, and you'll have access to new features as soon as they're released.
Confusion

- Price: Free/$20/month
- Platform: iOS/Android
Perplexity focuses on providing infinite amounts of knowledge instantly, and feels like a hybrid of a chatbot and a search engine.
The Standard plan only allows for 5 Pro searches per day, but moving up to Professional allows for 600 searches and gives you access to file analysis, multiple image generation options, and multiple LLMs.
Character.ai

- Price: $9.99/month
- Platform: iOS/Android
If this all feels a bit impersonal to you, it might be worth considering Character.ai instead, which allows users to create and talk to AI-generated characters, with a focus on conversation over providing quality information.
Users can hone their translation skills, brainstorm ideas collaboratively, and play text games with characters.
Google Gemini

- Price: Free/$20 as part of Google One
- Platform: iOS/Android
Google has been pushing AI hard in recent months (some might say a bit too hard), but its Gemini Chatbot is still available, at least on computers.
On iOS and Android, the device may lose connection to surrounding Google devices frequently and may be slow to respond.
Microsoft Copilot

- Price: Free/$20/month
- Platform: iOS/Android
Microsoft has Copilot at the forefront on Windows machines, and the companion apps on iOS and Android are also excellent.
The premium version offers faster response times and app integration with Office, but even without the premium version, the underlying technology is sound and leverages OpenAI models to assist with image generation and content creation.
