While the technology community is over the moon about the possibilities of generative AI tools, like ChatGPT, non-technical people are not jumping on the bandwagon just yet, observes TJ Moretto, VP Babylist.
Less than 20% of people have tried either ChatGPT or Google Bard, according to a recent survey in early June.
I want to first honor this hesitation, which I believe primarily arises from concerns regarding data privacy and security, as well as the fear of potential misuse or reliance on AI-generated content for critical decision-making. The black-box nature of generative AI algorithms, where the inner workings are often opaque and difficult to interpret, can also contribute to uncertainty about the reliability and accuracy of the outputs.
Additionally, there is a genuine apprehension about technology replacing human jobs or leading to unintended consequences, such as the propagation of biased or harmful information. Addressing these concerns and fostering transparent communication about the responsible use and limitations of ChatGPT is crucial to building trust and ensuring a more inclusive adoption of generative AI in the workplace.
The fact of the matter is that generative AI tools can be incredibly effective – both in and outside of the workplace for time-saving administrative tasks. But to truly adopt that sentiment and embrace generative AI tools, IT leaders need to coach non-technical employees about the hype, including what is real and what is not real. What I’m personally finding is that education is the secret sauce to adoption.

How To Empower the Use of ChatGPT in Non-technical Roles
Here are three ways that non-technical team members can be motivated to embrace ChatGPT. It’s an ongoing process and effort, but we’ve seen a significant uptick in productivity and utilization since starting this initiative. 80% have now used ChatGPT at least once within the organization, while approximately 50% are using it or some other AI-powered tool as part of their job.
1. Led an all-hands meeting to introduce the concept of ChatGPT, explain its origin and review why it’s getting so much hype: In this meeting, I carefully outlined the reasons why generative AI tools were generating so much excitement within the tech community. By providing real-world examples and success stories from other companies, I illustrated the practical applications and benefits of integrating ChatGPT into daily workflows.
During the meeting, I emphasized that ChatGPT should not be seen as a replacement for human intelligence but rather as a powerful support tool. I clarified that generative AI could help streamline time-consuming administrative tasks, allowing employees to focus on more strategic and creative endeavors. We also broke into small groups to test and use ChatGPT to solve real business problems. This seemed like a lightbulb moment for many participants on the power of ChatGPT, in addition to its outcome with the right prompts and use cases.
2. Offered guidance and documentation for all employees to explain how they should use ChatGPT: To ensure smooth adoption and avoid misuse of ChatGPT, I shared specific use cases where ChatGPT could be leveraged effectively, such as creating formulaic documents, conducting research, and enhancing overall efficiency. The handouts also explicitly outlined situations where ChatGPT should not be utilized, such as making final decisions, handling sensitive or confidential information, and engaging in critical decision-making processes.
By offering such clear guidelines, I ensured that employees understood the boundaries and limitations of ChatGPT, thereby fostering responsible usage and minimizing potential risks associated with over-reliance on AI-generated content. The Babylist leadership team not only encouraged experimentation but was also liberal in granting paid accounts to those that requested. Managers noticed right away that mindset helped entice usage.
3. Created a company-wide ChatGPT Slack channel as a repository for all employees to communicate about it, share tips and tricks, and offer suggestions for each business unit specific on how best to apply the tool: This platform served as a repository where employees from all business units could communicate about ChatGPT, exchange valuable insights, and offer practical tips and tricks for using the tool effectively within their respective domains. The Slack channel encouraged a vibrant community of users who supported each other’s efforts in applying ChatGPT to diverse use cases.
Since the channel’s inception, nearly 30% of the members have been using ChatGPT. This shared knowledge pool facilitated the dissemination of best practices, leading to innovative and creative applications of generative AI across various departments like marketing, HR, and more. It’s also important to state that there was necessary skepticism raised in the channel, where members safely and freely voiced their apprehension. Over time, that apprehension lessened as the community became more familiar with ChatGPT and other AI tools.

By empowering employees with the right knowledge and context, we enabled non-technical colleagues to harness the true power of ChatGPT for time-saving administrative tasks and other value-adding applications. As a result, Babylist promoted a more efficient, creative, and empowered workforce driven by both human intelligence and cutting-edge AI technology. With this journey as a guide, other IT leaders can also pave the way for their companies to embrace the potential of generative AI and drive innovation to new heights.
We intend to continue educating and involving employees as we evaluate AI for productivity improvements and building new product experiences. Our IT leadership is actively looking at workplace productivity tools ranging from collaboration to time management. Our product and engineering teams are looking at how we can take our data and ML investments to the next level and build product experiences that weren’t really possible six months ago. I want to look at everything and see if we can do it better or faster. I believe that AI will impact all of our jobs in some way and that we should be active participants in deciding how we leverage this new development.
