In a December 2024 survey with Harris Poll, we asked B2B marketers where they should invest most in 2025. Artificial intelligence tools were at the top of the list. It was no surprise that AI architects were mentioned. time As the ripple effects of technology continue to spread across all fields, he was named the magazine's Person of the Year. And in 2026, B2B decision makers will do something new: back to basics. andReimagine what's possible with AI.
This approach reveals a compelling duality in how marketers are planning for 2026. There is a return to what we used to know, and at the same time we are betting big on AI as a force that will not only reimagine work, but rewrite the strategies of today's B2B marketers and modern buyers. According to the latest Harris Poll, next year will bring a clear recognition that while the fundamentals of marketing haven't changed, the way it's executed absolutely will.
the pendulum swings back
For years, marketers have been chasing the next shiny thing: new formats, new platforms, new channels. But the pendulum is swinging back. According to the study, leaders say their biggest investments in 2026 will focus on customer experience and brand building, rather than the latest social platforms or the latest advertising technology.
A collective realization is happening. In an AI-driven environment, brands with the strongest emotional equity and deepest buyer trust will win. By doubling down on loyalty, automation, and reputation, organizations can differentiate themselves and ensure that every marketing dollar contributes to sustainable, long-term growth. Loyalty is no longer a metric. That's Hori.
But returning to what works doesn't necessarily mean returning to traditional tactics.
AI does not replace strategy
More than half (55%) of marketing decision makers expect AI to reshape both marketing strategy development and execution. It's not a subtle change. This means moving from strategies built in quarterly cycles to dynamically updated based on actions, signals, and real-time learning.
This shift requires marketers to embrace AI rather than fear it. Positioning AI as a strategic input allows strategies to evolve with the market, putting leaders in the strongest position to reach today's modern buyers at the right time and place.
AI becomes the connective tissue that brings together audience data, creative insights, content intelligence, and activation. Audience understanding becomes dynamic as AI continuously interprets signals and behaviors to identify who is truly in the market. Content and messaging adapt in real-time as AI learns what resonates across channels. Orchestration becomes predictive, determining where buyers are most likely to engage next and routing the right messages to the right surfaces. Measurement moves from backwards to forwards, revealing early signals that guide creative, budget, and activation decisions.
The strategy itself becomes fluid, evolves and is continually optimized. Instead of asking, “Is my strategy correct?” marketers will ask, “Is my strategy learning fast enough?”
Zero click is reshaping brand competition
Almost half (45%) of marketing leaders believe that AI-powered search and assistants will dramatically change the way customers discover brands. This means marketers are beginning to understand a new reality. In 2026, there will be competition before clicks.
In a zero-click environment, buyer behavior is no longer linear. People are forming opinions within our AI overview, chat assistant, recommendation engine, and results pages that summarize our expertise without sending any traffic. The search-click-read-evaluate process by which marketers build their strategies has been replaced by a simultaneous process of discovery and evaluation, often without ever visiting a website. Buyers may never land on your page, but they've already established a perception of your trustworthiness, authority, and relevance.
This change requires a fundamentally different approach to visibility. Creating great content is no longer enough. Brands need to create a signal. Reputation, authority, and consistency become new KPIs as AI systems rely on patterns across the broader ecosystem, not just what exists within their domain.
A zero-click environment rewards brands that appear with clarity and consistency across all channels, not just those they own. Winning brands are those that influence answers long before a user visits the brand's web page.
This is not a retreat from brand building. It's an evolved version of that.
AI enhances the fundamentals, not replaces them
The findings tell a clear story. AI doesn’t exempt marketers from the hard work of building a brand. That work becomes even more important. Rather than overshadowing fundamentals like loyalty, reputation, and customer experience, AI deepens their impact. It enables a level of personalization never before possible, transforming the understanding of your audience by replacing static personas with living intelligence.
AI dynamically orchestrates channels rather than treating them as separate strategies, collapsing the long-standing divide between brand marketing and performance marketing. The two areas are interdependent, and each is powered by AI's ability to learn, predict, and adapt throughout the customer journey.
However, recognizing the potential of AI and putting it into practical use are two completely different things. True competitive advantage in 2026 won't come from experimenting with a few tools. It comes from incorporating AI across the entire lifecycle, including strategy, creation, activation, measurement, and optimization. Marketers are already sensing this shift coming. AI is becoming less of an appendage and more of an operating system for modern marketing.
The question of the year ahead isn't whether marketers will use AI. It's about extending it in a way that elevates the core principles that have always distinguished the strongest brands.
Get back to basics, get smarter
Headlines for 2026: AI will take on even more fundamental importance. Marketers are rediscovering that while leveraging AI to execute these fundamentals with far greater intelligence, speed, and impact, trust, loyalty, and brand still determine winners.
And next year, the successful brands will be those that combine timeless principles with innovative technology. Back to basics, this time with an engine powerful enough to take you further than ever before.
Good marketing and advertising has always been an art. AI doesn't make it any weaker. It just enhances it.
