A 12-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man have been charged with murder after a boy shot and killed an employee at the Sonic Drive-In restaurant in Texas, police said.
Local police said the shooting occurred Saturday night at Sonic, Block 300, South Old Betsy Road, Keene. Keene is located approximately 30 miles south of Fort Worth.
Authorities said Angel Gomez, 20, was driving to the Sonic with other passengers and was acting “disorderly” in the parking lot when Sonic employee Matthew Davis, 32, was killed. ) was confronted.
Keene Police Chief James Kidd said Davis questioned Gomez for urinating in the parking lot, according to NBC Dallas-Fort Worth.
Police said the two had an altercation and the conflict turned physical.
A Fort Worth boy who was in the suspect’s vehicle during the altercation “pulled out a firearm, fired several shots and punched the victim,” police said in a statement.
Keen police have not released the boy’s identity, but the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, which helped respond to the shooting, said the juvenile suspect in the shooting was 12 years old.
Police were called to the scene shortly after 9:30 p.m. local time, but Gomez and the boy had already fled the scene of the shooting.
Officers found Davis “lying in a parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds,” police said.
He was taken to Harris Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Gomez eventually returned to the scene and was taken into custody. Police said law enforcement found and detained a boy in Rio Vista and recovered several firearms.
Fundraiser said Davis left his 10-year-old son to support his family and pay for his funeral. As of Tuesday, the fundraiser has raised over $10,000.
Sonic said in a statement: “We are sorry to learn of the tragedy involving our franchise team members in Keene, Texas. The franchisees are cooperating fully with local authorities in their investigation.”
