YouTube is adding new AI (AI) capabilities to its platform. On Thursday, the video streaming giant announced Carousel in search results. This is displayed when users search for a specific keyword. The new Carousel introduces suggested video and video text descriptions in the new layout, to help users learn more about them. This new feature is currently limited to premium YouTube subscriptions in the US. Additionally, Google-owned platforms extend conversational AI tools to some non-premium users.
YouTube brings new AI-powered video carousels
In a blog post, YouTube introduced new AI features. The company began testing search results carousels in April, making it available to a small subset of premium users. It is currently expanding to a wider foundation for premium US users.

The AI feature displays new carousels for specific keywords when you shop, travel, or search for things to do at a specific location. The results page displays a new layout with a large video clip at the top, followed by thumbnails of other suggested videos below. YouTube also adds AI-generated text about queries. To watch the video, users can tap on the large video clip at the top to see another video. They can tap on a small thumbnail.
Currently, this feature is only available for English videos on Android and iOS. According to the YouTube experiment page, this probation period will last until July 30th. The company may then expand its functionality to other regions.
Separately, YouTube is expanding its conversational AI tools to some non-premium users in the US. This feature is indicated by a Sparkle icon under the same line of video, something like a button, sharing, downloading. Users can also ask questions about the video and ask for recommendations. The chatbot is equipped with Gemini. It was first introduced in April 2024 and was only available to premium users. In particular, this feature is only available on Android devices.
