[Digital Today reporter Jinju Hong] xAI has launched Grok Imagine Video 1.5, an AI model that generates video from images.
On June 18, local time, the online media Gigazine reported that xAI has started officially using the model through the Imagine API.
With this release, the previous preview version, Grok Imagine 1.5 Preview, has been retired. xAI previously released the model in preview form in June. With the transition to the official version, API users will be using Grok Imagine Video 1.5 instead of the preview.
The key point of this update is that a high-speed model has been introduced separately in conjunction with the official API release. Grok for the web and iOS and Android allows users to use Grok Imagine Video 1.5 Fast. According to xAI, this model produces video nearly twice as fast as previous models.
xAI also provided speed numbers. Grok Imagine Video 1.5 Fast can generate a 6 second 720p video in about 25 seconds. With the previous model, it took more than 40 seconds to create a video under the same conditions. The move to apply different model configurations to public APIs and user apps can be interpreted as an effort to combine official service enhancements with perceived performance improvements.
In terms of performance, xAI ranks Grok Imagine Video 1.5 1st and 2nd in the world across multiple AI benchmarks. However, this announcement focuses more on expanding the actual distribution range than benchmark results. By ending the preview stage and publishing the API, we will be able to efficiently create an environment where developers and service operators can directly attach models.
The push to expand the creative tools ecosystem continued. Heavy Pulp, a creative experimentation platform for visual effects artists, has collaborated with xAI to release a video produced with Grok Imagine Video 1.5 Fast. xAI introduced this as a real-world use case for the fast model.
Subsequent features were also previewed. xAI said it plans to roll out features to improve creative workflows in the coming days. The new features consist of “Projects” displayed on the left sidebar, “Multi-Agent” which allows you to run multiple agents in parallel within one project, and “Search”, a library search function.
xAI updates are more like improving the usage environment than simply replacing the model. The availability of a common API expands external usage, and the fast model reduces generation latency within apps. It also indicated a direction for improving overall creative operations, including adding project management and search functions. It will be interesting to see whether these functions will be rolled out sequentially within the next few days, and whether the high-speed model will be rolled out to usage environments other than web and mobile.
