Xai co-founder Igor Babuschkin resigns to launch AI Safety Venture.

Igor Babuschkin, one of the founding hearts behind him Elon MuskArtificial intelligence startup Xai has resigned to launch a new chapter dedicated to AI safety. In an X's post, Babuschkin confirmed his departure and announced the launch of Babuschkin Ventures, writing, “Today was my last day at Xai.”

AI researchers who previously worked at Google's Deepmind and Openai played a crucial role in shaping Xai early on. Looking back on his journey, Babshkin recalls the “early scramble” to build infrastructure and AI models, adding that he was responsible for many of the “basic tools” used to launch and manage training jobs. Over time, he led engineering efforts by applying infrastructure, product development and AI initiatives.

His exit indicates another advanced level departure for Xai. Musk challenged what he considers as an over-the-top big technology in the AI space in 2023. Musk is an outspoken critic of the industry, often accusing key players of impose excessive restrictions and ignoring safety measures.

This latest resignation follows the resignation of Zai's legal director, Robert Kiel, who resigned earlier this month. Just a few weeks ago, Linda Jaccarino also vacated her role as CEO of Musk Musk, a social media platform that was integrated into Xai last year. These leadership changes reflect the ongoing transition across the Mask portfolio, including Tesla.

In response to Babuschkin's announcement, Musk continued to shorten his message, but especially warm “lucky, Igor.” The heartfelt tone stood out for many observers given his keen public interactions with Musk's former colleagues.

Babuschkin's decision comes when competition in AI is reaching a hot pitch. Industry giants like Openai, Google and Anthropic are putting their resources into advanced AI systems that are expected to shape the next generation of technology. Xai has established itself as a challenger and promotes Chatbot Grok as a more open alternative to products such as ChatGpt.

Babuschkin does not provide detailed plans for his new company, but Babuschkin Ventures' mission is closely aligning the growing global driving force for responsible AI practices by funding safe AI development. Governments, researchers, and advocacy groups are increasingly focused on ensuring that strong AI models are developed using robust safety protocols to avoid potential misuse and unintended harm.

For Musk, Babshkin's departure represents another challenge in maintaining the finest talent at Zai, especially as rivals with much greater financial resources continue to invite experienced engineers and researchers. But for Babuschkin, it's a transition from building AI systems to allowing others to build responsibly. This is a goal that can attract attention from both investors and policymakers looking to influence the ethical trajectory of AI.

As AI races accelerate, Babuschkin's move highlights the key issues facing the industry. It's not just how powerful AI can be, it's just how safe it can be built.
