(Kitco News) – BHP Billiton today announced that it has leveraged artificial intelligence with Microsoft to boost copper recovery at Escondida.

BHP’s partnership with Microsoft will use artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve copper recovery at the world’s largest copper mine, the miner said in a statement.

By enhancing the capabilities of new digital technologies with new ways of working, the team at Escondida is well-positioned to create more value from existing resources, said Laura Tyler, chief technology officer at BHP. Stated.

“We expect the next big wave in mining to come from the advanced use of digital technology. As existing copper mines degrade and new economic discoveries decline, artificial intelligence, Next-generation technologies such as machine learning, data analytics will be needed to extract more production and value from existing mines,” she said.

Production at BHP’s Escondida, the world’s largest copper mine, increased by 4.3% to 1,054,000 tonnes in 2022. The company said the increase in Escondida’s copper production was primarily due to an improvement in the supply grade of its concentrates.
