We are looking for a Research Fellow in Mathematical Optimization for Machine Learning based at the University of Southampton. This post is an integral part of a new research project funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
This project brings together two-level optimization and machine learning experts to develop optimization theory and techniques to address problems in the very rapidly evolving field of two-level optimization-based machine learning and data science. Part of an initiative to explore the most tractable ideas for building numerical schemes. The purpose of this project is to review the literature to build a picture of the potential of bilevel bilevel optimization in machine learning as a first step in this collaborative framework. This work thus sets the foundation for this initiative by developing fundamental theoretical and numerical results to better understand the structure of such problems. Partners in this project are the University of Southampton, University College London, North Carolina State University, University of Rome I (La Sapienza), University of Tokyo and IBM UK.
This full-time one-year position, with the possibility of extension if further funding is secured, provides the opportunity to visit some of our project partners and attend major international conferences in optimization and machine learning. increase. Limited relocation costs can also be covered. Successful applicants must have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in operations research, mathematical optimization, machine learning, computer science, statistics, or a related field, the ability to conduct research independently and as part of a team, and track must have A record of high-quality original research. Expertise in theoretical and numerical optimization is an advantage.
Research Fellows are affiliated with the Operational Research Group (one of four research groups at Southampton’s Department of Mathematical Sciences; see http://www.southampton.ac.uk/maths for more information) and Centre. Studies in Operational Research, Management Science and Information Systems (CORSIS). CORMSIS is one of the largest and strongest groups of OR/MS/IS researchers in Europe. Its statistics and operational research rank it among the top 40 in the world and the top 10 in the UK (QS Subject Rank 2020). The center has many contacts with industry and an extensive academic network and a strong track record of published research activity.
This position is effective from 1 July 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter. The application must include a resume including a list of publications, a brief (less than one page) statement of research interest, and the names and emails of her two referees and her addresses.
*Applications for Research Fellowship will be considered from candidates working towards or nearing completion of a relevant Ph.D. Her Fellowship in Research applies upon completion of her Ph.D. Prior to the awarding of qualifications, the title of Senior Research Assistant is awarded.
