It's certainly nothing new, but in recent years it's become popular for everything from the generated futuristic images that flood your Facebook feed to people utilizing programs like ChatGPT to caption social media or summarize full essays. We are seeing the emergence of new types of AI. .
In an effort to help you understand the purpose and fundamentals of technology, Google recently launched the “Grow With Google AI Essentials” course in collaboration with education platform Coursera. EBONY had the opportunity to speak with Maya Kulycky, vice president of strategy and operations for the brand's research division. She gave us some insight into why we all want to learn more about AI, especially in the workplace.
EBONY: Please briefly tell us about your role at Google.
Maya Kulycky: I work as a strategy and operations lead at Google Research. I have worked in an industrial research laboratory for over 10 years. So every day I'm lucky enough to think about the upcoming breakthroughs in technology and be a part of creating new tools for the world.
Why did we need to introduce this now in our new Grow with Google AI Essentials course?
I feel like we've reached a tipping point. People are asking a lot of questions and wondering how AI can help them in their lives and workplaces. And what can we do with it? So it seems like the timing was perfect. This course provides an introduction to AI, maximizing productivity using AI tools, discovering prompt engineering techniques for designing inputs that produce the right results, how to use AI responsibly, and the advancements in AI. We focus on five areas of how to get ahead of the curve. . We wanted to create something relatable because there's so much out there right now that's aimed at people.
What are some ways that AI can help us be more productive, especially in the workplace?
Using summaries is a good way to proceed. Sometimes you just need to be organized and stay ahead of the curve. That's where tools like AI can help give you a quick overview and prioritize what you should pay attention to first. It can simply improve your working life.

One of those principles is accountability to people. We want people to feel safe. Within the course, this is not accessed to act independently of people, but is intended to help them make better decisions.
