How it works, and why it takes an amazingly long time to make something good.
How do AI artists maintain consistency with recurring characters? AI art may seem like a few clicks, but it can take quite some time.
The video above shows the simplified workflow of the anonymous creator behind “Stelfie” — a time-traveling selfie-taker. The artist’s process includes custom 3D-generated heads, initial sketches, and extensive switching between Photoshop and the AI program Stable Diffusion to achieve the ideal look.
Throughout this process, the artist uses typical AI techniques such as inpainting (modifying a specific image area), outpainting (extending it outside the frame), denoising (controlling changes in the image), etc. Use art tools. AI art is as labor intensive as traditional art, but its tangible results make the final product unique.
