Whatcom County detective says colleague used AI to fabricate sexual video of girlfriend

AI Video & Visuals

A detective with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office has filed a $30 million tort suit alleging that a fellow detective created AI content that specifically targeted her sexually.

According to a misconduct complaint obtained by KIRO 7, a detective with the unit allegedly fabricated images of the victim’s father, who was once the only female detective in the department, performing a sexual act. The AI-generated video was then shared with multiple officers within the department.

Victims say the incident is part of a long-standing hostile work environment. This particular incident allegedly occurred in April.

Whatcom County Sheriff Donnell Tanksley said accountability is paramount, and multiple investigations into these allegations are currently underway. The Mount Vernon Police Department is conducting one of these investigations.

As of this report, the detective allegedly behind the video has been placed on paid administrative leave.

The Attorney General’s Office previously established a task force to address misuse of AI. Using AI for fraud can result in prison terms and hefty fines.
