You may have heard of ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, but you may not have heard of the technology behind it or what happens next. That leads to Google’s Gemini.
Artificial intelligence was a hot topic on stage at Google’s 2023 I/O event. Much of the chat was about features coming soon to other products such as Google’s Workspace app suite and search, but we also touched a little bit on what’s coming.
As with Microsoft and its work with Bing and ChatGPT integration, AI language models are likely to play an important role in Google’s future. The next step is Google Gemini. The basics are:
What is Google Gemini?
Gemini is Google’s next-generation foundation model. It follows PaLM 2, the current AI model behind Google’s Bard chatbot and other recently announced features. Google Gemini is currently still in training mode and is expected to become OpenAI’s main GPT competitor once it launches.
According to Google, the upcoming Gemini AI was built to be multimodal, with a focus on tooling and API integration. This allows for broader collaboration. It is also designed to accommodate future developments such as improving memory and planning.
It’s unclear what additional features Google Gemini will enable, but PaLM 2-powered features revealed at Google I/O include the ability to create text and images within apps like Google Docs and Sheets. It included Duet AI, a tool that generates This kind of generation can help add depth to your ideas, provide a richer spreadsheet, or better explain data and such.
Google I/O also announced Help Me Write (which does what it says) and new AI-integrated search, introducing new ways to write essays and proposals, along with Google’s biggest product Redefined search.
PaLM 2 now also features non-productivity enhancements such as Med-PaLM2 trained on health research terminology using medical knowledge and Sec-PaLM used for cybersecurity analysis.
We expect Gemini to continue to enhance all these features, workplace, security, productivity and more.
But what happened? Google says it has been “fine-tuned and rigorously tested for safety.” As with PaLM 2, different sizes and different features will be available once the Gemini foundation model is complete.
